Tauranga tour companies and hundreds of businesses will experience the start of a welcomed boost in revenue next month as Tauranga prepares for its biggest cruise ship season on record.
The 2015/16 cruise ship season kicks off on 7th October 2015 with the arrival of the Diamond Princess into Port of Tauranga, the first of 78 cruise ship visits to Tauranga up until 18th May 2016. It was only 10 years ago that only around 10 cruise ships visited Tauranga throughout the season.
To add to the excitement for Tauranga businesses and locals will be the maiden arrival of Royal Caribbean International’s mega liner ‘Explorer of The Seas’ and super liner ‘Legend of the Seas’. Explorer of the Seas will visit Tauranga nine times during the 2015/16 cruise season and the Legend of the Seas just once, on January 30. Royal Caribbean, which is the largest cruise brand in New Zealand, is estimated to have contributed $5.46 million of tourist dollars to the regional economy last cruise season.
It is not only Tauranga people that will be excited by this bumper season for tourist numbers, but also Rotorua, the most in-demand destination for visitors outside of Tauranga. There are a myriad of Tauranga to Rotorua day tours on offer that include the city’s spectacular geothermal activity. These include Whakarewarewa – The Living Maori Village, along with Te Puia and Wai-o-Tapu day tours.
